The island had exceptional economic growth in the past, thanks to its great naval and commercial activity. The Hydriots contributed significantly also to the 1821 War of Independence as their powerful fleet participated in crucial sea battles.

The Historical Museum of Hydra,was founded in 1918 and hosts an important collection of portraits,archives and exhibits, relating to the history and the culture of Hydra.

Beaches
Mandraki is an organised beach with excellent water sport facilities.
Limnioniza many people consider it as the most beautiful beach on the island
Agios Nikolaos is a sandy beach, on the west of the island. Access is only possible by boat.
Vlychos is a beach covered with pebbles.There are taverns that serves local food.
Nighttlife
Hydra town has a very good and varied nightlife. Most places are quite sophisticated and relaxed, but there are also clubs and discos where you can party until the morning.
Getting There
The easiest way to get here is to take a direct flight to Athens and then the ferryboat or hydrofoil from Piraeus. The island also have boats to and from Spetses and Poros.
